Το όνομα Viking προέρχεται από τους ίδιους τους Σκανδιναβούς,
από την παλαιά νορβηγική λέξη "vik" (κόλπος ή κολπίσκος)
που σχημάτιζε τη ρίζα του "vikingr" (πειρατής).
Οι Βίκινγκ ήταν εθνοτική ομάδα, τμήμα των Βορείων Λαών της Ευρώπης.
Κατά τη διάρκεια του Μεσαίωνα εμφανίσθηκαν
ως εξερευνητές, πειρατές, έμποροι, μισθοφόροι
(ή και τα τέσσερα μαζί) σε μεγάλο κομμάτι της Ευρώπης.
Κοιτίδα τους ήταν η Σκανδιναβία και τέσσερα σημερινά έ
θνη έλκουν την καταγωγή τους από αυτούς:
Νορβηγοί, Σουηδοί, Δανοί, Ισλανδοί
